NCA is developing the Urban MTB Trail in Philips Park, Whitefield
In 2015 a MTB trail was designed and built in Philips Park, Whitefield, providing a course for mountain bike lessons. At the time, it was the first flow trail in the UK. The trail is a multi-use route in two short sections. The south trail has table tops and berms, whilst the north trail is for the more advanced rider with technical jumps. Sadly, due to a shortfall in maintenance funding the route is now in need of remedial works and a new surface top coat.

This year, NCA have sourced some funding in partnership with Bury Council, who own the park and trail. The whole trail will be safety checked and resurfaced with new features added in to keep it fresh and suitable for today’s riders. A new MTB skills course will be in integrated into our offerings.
We envisage that half of the trail at a time will be closed to riders with dates to be confirmed. Plant and machinery will be on site. (Please don’t try to ride it until the repairs are completed)
There are other trail centres to visit, such as those at Whinlatter and Coed Llandegla, which have fantastic facilities and great routes. However, should you not wish to spend half the day driving and a tenner to park up then our urban trail could be for you!
MTB Lessons
The park for our mountain biking in Manchester is located just off Junction 17 of the M60. Parking is free. We are still working on providing catering facilities but feel free to bring your own flask and a picnic. Apart from the MTB trail at Philips Park, there are Forestry Commission green and blue routes adjacent to Philips and cycle route 6 is easily accessible. In effect, you can ride from the centre of Manchester to Holcombe Hill and beyond if you chose to.
As part of our MTB lessons package, we have various skills sessions you can sign up to. From taster mountain bike sessions or skills days, to volunteering to assist with the trail maintenance and joining the BLACK DOG MTB CLUB. Our mountain biking instructors are experienced riders who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and helping you improve your skills on the trail.

“What a great facility!I live in Manchester but hadn’t been on the trails here before. When I arrived, parking up was free. Good to see other mountain bikers in the park too. The trail itself has a good flow of berms, drops and jumps, designed in a figure of eight. There are more blue and green graded trails at the bottom of the hill which are worth exploring.”
