NCA’s sister company, the URBAN CYCLE CENTRE CIC has been successful in gaining funding for a new bike recycling project. Thanks to funding from GMWA, the project will launch as of February and run throughout the year. The plan is to collect and ‘re-cycle’ old, abandoned, unloved bikes and give them a new lease of life..
The donated bikes will come from a variety of sources including schools in Oldham, Rochdale and Bury where NCA currently train children to cycle in a safer way on the roads in their local community. Collection points will also include local supermarkets and community events in order for the general public to drop bikes off on specified days
The bikes will be assessed by our team of CYTECH Technicians; wherever possible they will be repaired and pressed into use instantly. Uses will include:
Bikeability training courses in primary and secondary schools
Organised family rides in the local community
Some will be available for hire by youth clubs and other groups
A pool of bikes will be available for summer cycle camps during school holidays
Bikes not suitable for re-use will be broken down and used as spares
During the rebuilding part of the scheme, volunteers will be able to undertake an OCN qualification in cycle repairs with the guidance of our qualified staff. Recumbants and adapted bikes will be designed and built by the repair team for use by people with differing requirements at our base in Philips Park, Whitefield
If you have a bike lying idle in your garage or garden shed, put it to good use and give us a call!
