Cycle Speedway
As grass roots sports go this is the real deal.
Created in the immediate aftermath of the second world war by a youth in love wth speedway and looking for their own form of excitement amongst the bombed out towns and cities of the UK. Within years it became a popular international sport.
Cycle-speedway is a fast paced adrenaline fuelled sport, which is the only form of body contact cycling. Four riders compete in a race lasting four laps and can shoulder barge their way past to gain the lead. An average track lap is 72metres in length and a race can take as little as 40seconds to complete. Riders race four or five times in a race meeting and are rewarded points, depending on where they finish. Four points for first, three for second, two for third and one for fourth. The rider with the most points at the end of the meeting wins. Meetings are conducted in individual and team format, with riders racing in pairs for team events. The bikes are specially designed, single speed free-wheel machines with NO brakes. Frames are usually made from steel or aluminium and weigh very little.
Cycle-speedway helps build explosive leg power aswell as being a great cardio workout. It also builds riders awareness and confidence whilst trying to out manoeuvre your opponents.
Taster sessions are conducted on an official shale speedway track using speedway cycles (cycles and safety helmets provided).
